Transforming Trash into Treasure: The Story of an Upcycled Baroque Mirror Frame. A cake stand.

Accidental Discovery

In a world where creativity meets ecology, my latest project is a story about how you can turn old junk into something really cool. And it all started quite by accident, while taking out the garbage :-) . What I discovered exceeded my wildest expectations and immediately inspired me to take action.

Treasure in the Trash

Treasure in the Trash In the trash, I stumbled upon something amazing — an abandoned, golden, baroque mirror frame with a base that someone had discarded. I couldn't believe someone threw away something so beautiful and full of potential. Without the mirror, but with plenty of possibilities, that frame immediately caught my attention. It was the moment when I thought, "Let's make something great out of this!" and my adventure with upcycling began.

Paper Mache

I decided to transform this old frame into a unique cake stand. Armed with paper mache, paints, and lots of creative energy, I got to work. The process began with gentle cleaning and preparation of the surface. Then I applied paper mache to the structure, which I made of thin wire. This process was not short, but it gave me a lot of satisfaction.

A Bit of Humor

But what would transformation be without a bit of humor? Finally, I decorated the plate with fancy drawings, from which the words "f*ck the diet" emerged. This small detail was eye-catching and made the stand not only functional, but full of character. I couldn't wait to see my guests' reactions to this cheeky sign. After all, who said art can't be fun?

Step by Step to a New Life

In my guide, I described this crazy adventure from zero to hero — from the trash to a masterpiece. I showed how ordinary things can turn into something extraordinary. In the meantime, I demonstrated a few techniques and used tools that turned out to be indispensable. I hope this tutorial will inspire you to look for treasures in things that others would consider garbage. Because who knows, maybe thanks to this, you'll give new life to forgotten items, and I'll be able to say: mission accomplished!

I started by disassembling and cleaning the entire frame.

In order to fill the space with paper mache, I had to trace the shape of the frame.

I used wire to create a structure on which the paper mache would be supported.

I rolled out the paper mache to the size of the frame.

I applied the paper mache onto the frame and pressed it down using a roller. I removed any excess material.

To securely attach the cake stand to its base, I used a metal jar lid with a hole drilled in it - through which I threaded a screw.

When the paper mache had dried, I glued a metal element using two-component glue. I also attached the screw.

After the glue dried, I applied the top layer of paper mache.

After the mache had dried, I painted the entire piece in a golden color.

I decided to decorate the whole thing with a funny quote: 'Fuck The Diet.' So, I cut out the printed letters and attached them to the top surface of the stand using double-sided tape.

Next, I cut out an abstract shape from paper, which I also adhered to the surface using double-sided tape.

Using a white fine liner, I traced the pattern.

Then, I removed the paper template.

Next, using a white fine liner, I applied decorative lines that formed an abstract shape. After drying, I removed the paper letters.

The final step was to apply resin to seal and protect the entire piece.
