Upcycling - the art of salvaging items

Upcycling is not just a sustainable approach to craftsmanship, but also an opportunity to breathe new life into forgotten or discarded items. By reusing old mirrors, not only do I reduce waste, but I also create a unique item with sentimental value. Creative renovation of such an item can also be an expression of environmental concern, promoting both minimalism and simplicity.

The minimalist beauty of Scandinavian style

Scandinavian design is known for its minimalist aesthetic, characterized by clean lines, simplicity, and functionality. The color palette often includes neutral shades such as white, gray, and earthy tones. By incorporating these elements into the mirror project, you can capture the essence of Scandinavian minimalism and create a visually appealing item. It's more than just a mirror - it's an expression of simplicity and elegance that harmonizes with various interior styles, adding a touch of Scandinavian freshness.

Personalization for a unique effect

One of the advantages of this DIY project is its versatility. You can personalize the mirror to suit the recipient's taste or match your home decor. Consider adding decorative elements such as natural textures, natural twine, or more wooden elements. This way, each mirror becomes a unique work of art that reflects the individual style and preferences of its owner. Get inspired and create something exceptional with this simple and elegant DIY project!

To create the Scandinavian-Inspired Minimalist Mirror, you will need:

  • An old mirror

  • Wooden utensil (spoon or another tool with a wooden handle)

  • Paper mache

  • Piece of wood for the base (in this case, a pallet block was used)

  • Drill

  • Knife

  • Sandpaper

  • White paint and brush

  • PVA glue

  • Roller (e.g., a pastry roller)

I started by using sandpaper to smooth the surface of the pallet block.

Next, I paint it with white paint.

I roll out the paper mache to flatten it.

Next, I apply the wooden spoon to it.

I apply a thick layer of paper mache around the wooden spoon.

I use a roller to flatten the paper mache once again, ensuring a smooth and even surface.

I place the mirror on top of the entire structure.

I trim off any excess paper mache using a knife.

Next, I proceed to create the edge of the mirror.

I roll out a long piece of paper mache clay.

I cut a strip from it that is equal in width to the height of the mirror's side.

Then, I fold the excess clay so that it slightly overlaps onto the mirror.

I roll over it once again.

And I shape the edges.

I leave the entire piece to dry completely.

After it has dried, I smooth the surface using sandpaper.

Using a drill, I create a hole large enough to fit the wooden handle.

The final step is to secure the wooden handle to the pallet block using PVA glue.
